UK jobs 'to be created'

The UK jobs market is likely to grow despite the uncertain economic climate, it has been claimed.

According to the 'Working Futures report published by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, the number of jobs in business and other services is likely to increase by 1.3 million over the long term, while 500,000 new jobs are expected to be created in distribution and transport.

The organisation went on to say 170,000 jobs will be created in the construction industry by large projects such as the 2012 Olympics.

Secretary of state for work and pensions James Purnell commented: "We must not lose sight of the future needs of our economy and do all we can to help people get the secure career jobs they want and need in the industries where growth will be the strongest."

Last week, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation claimed the government should focus on creating jobs immediately rather than supporting the long-term unemployed.
