Construction jobs 'remain available'

Jobs remain in the construction sector despite the economic downturn, it has been claimed.

According to Graham Watts, chief executive of the Construction Industry Council, companies working in infrastructure or building roads and railway tunnels still have buoyant order books and there is a great deal of this kind of work available.

He added that major projects are certain to go ahead, such as those involved with the Olympics and the Crossrail development.

"There are some silver linings in all of this but it does require the government to spend the money on construction activity that it has committed to spend," commented Mr Watts.

He went on to say that while the recession is affecting some sectors severely, such as house building, retail, industrial and commercial, there remains a large amount of work on construction, railway developments and underground projects.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics indicate the employment rate for people of working age was 74.2 per cent for the three months up to October 2008, down 0.4 per cent both from the previous quarter and over the year.
